I had this custom build done a few years ago on a Giant Reign-X Maestro frame, with very recent/current top-of-the-line components. This was like getting a bespoke suit tailored, where we discussed every component/spec in relation to where I bike in Sedona: tight, twisty, rocky, sharp turns, sudden drops, roller-coaster sections, technical trails that you need a twitchy, responsive bike for. And, how I wanted the bike to handle overall.
Samples of componentry:
• Specialized 7" travel front fork ($1100), which the builder said could swallow a 10-foot drop (I'm too old for drops, as I don't bounce like I used to, so I don't do them, although the builder said the bike was well suited for downhill).
• Reverb dropper post with an SMP saddle ($350)
• Stroker Ace 4-piston disc brakes that would just about stop a truck ($250)
• 2x9 gearset includes the best piece of kit I've ever had on an MTB: a HammerSchmidt 2-speed planetary crank up front. ($800) This thing is just fantastic. Need granny gear but are hard into pedal power? No need to release the pressure with this baby. One click and you're in low. Legendary chain security.
• SRAM X0 components ($1500)
• Inboard bar ends (personal spec)
It's a completely awesome, comfortable, super-responsive bike, but frankly, waaaaay more bike than I’m a rider . . . I've been mountain biking for 40 years, but now that I'm past 70, it's time for pedal assist and the switch to an eMTB. And that's why this one is up for grabs. Sure, I'll do great if I part it out, but wanted to offer it up complete for anyone who wants it, before I start dismantling. It has very low miles, as I busted up my shoulder doing remodeling on my home and had to switch to hiking for a few years very soon after I picked the bike up from the builder. I think I've ridden it three times. Feel free to ping in with questions or offers. I have priced it at $1000 less than I'd get for the parts (according to eBay's "completed items"), but I am open to a decent offer.
