Antique Hawkeye Refrigerated Tin Insert Picnic Basket, made in Burlington, Iowa. Hawkeye Co. was established in 1888 in Iowa and no longer exists. The top of the basket has "Patent Pending" along with the company logo, most likely made between 1902-1910. The original factory burned in 1928.

It has not been altered, it is in its original state. Purchased by me at an estate auction in the Amish area of Pennsylvania in the 1980s and used inside as a decoration. Excellent conversation piece or movie prop. Only thing missing is half of the leather top strap, as shown. Was in a smoke free and pet free home. No odors.

Wood and woven rattan basket. There is no missing wicker and the whole basket is in very good shape. The tin inside is also in very good shape with no discolorations. The top either removes completely or can fold in half.

Supposedly these were used on the back of a Model T or Model A. The ice goes in the smaller of the tin sides and the 1906 advertising said that a small chuck of ice could keep the whole thing cold for a very long time.

Large and heavy basket - weighs about 13 pounds. 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 10 inches high. This is an antique item and sold as is.
